MALCOLM HUNT-Reef Balls

Jul-30-2011 By Birdie the Boardie

MALCOLM HUNT-Reef Balls!
I seldom use this blog to get involved in any political argument, but I feel a point needs to be made on the value of commonsense over expediency, and a Council in my opinion making a bad choice, certainly need to be addressed on this issue.

“Reef Balls”
Concrete “Reef Balls” would be a perfect starting point, to alleviate the badly eroded Munna Point’s dog beach, according to Malcolm Hunt.
Advisory committee member Malcolm Hunt brought a variety of these parabolic concrete “reef balls” to the Noosa Parks Assoc.’s Environment Centre to bolster support for the credible alternative.

Money to Burn
The Council’s $3,000,000 budget called for the rehabilitation of Munna Pt. with a Training Wall. The “preferred by Council”, Geo-textile containers would be used here to form groynes, and also for the stabilisation of the upstream beach.

But…
The obviously cheaper (by $2,000,000) version, would be to use the Reef Balls. These Reef Balls certainly have a cost and life span benefit, over the councils preferred Geo-textile product, which breaks down in a short period.
 MALCOLM HUNT Reef Balls
Where is the value in whittling away yet again taxpayer’s money, on a barrier that won’t go the distance?

Peter Gardiner and Malcolm Hunt
You can view the complete article written by Peter Gardiner, and additional outlines on the product by Malcolm Hunt, that further states how and why this innovative product works so well in other places, and perplexed as to why Council is ignoring it..

SOUL SURFER – Bethany Hamilton

Jun-11-2011 By Birdie the Boardie

SOUL SURFER – Bethany Hamilton
For a courageous young lady to say that she thinks sharks are really beautiful, is a testament of true grit.
Bethany was a victim of a shark attack seven years ago at the tender age of 13, when a Tiger Shark took her left arm and almost her life. The water was not dirty, it was not over cast nor was it dusk or dawn. The conditions were ideal for a day in the water, being a sunny morning, with calm clear water when this Tiger shark “out of nowhere a huge shark thrust it’s nose up and took a bite out of my arm, that’s it”
Bethany lost over 60% of her life’s blood in the ordeal and the reality of losing her arm was to say the least, a shock.
It only took Bethany three weeks to get back in the water and the realisation that this event in her life was not going to deter her from reaching her goal…turning Pro. Bethany did this in 2007 with support from Rip Curl.
Bethany has since traveled the world working with relief organisations such as World Vision and being inspirational where ever she goes.
 SOUL SURFER Bethany Hamilton
Bethany Hamilton has her life depicted on the silver screen, in a movie called “Soul Surfer” this amazing fun feature, Bethany hopes “will encourage people to make the most out of their lives, no matter the circumstances”
Bethany sums it all up by saying “It’s been such an incredible journey and that I’m excited to share it”
Soul Surfer will be in the cinemas by June 2nd and with a block busting cast, filmed in Hawaii with the events as they happened in real life …just go see it!

BONDI RESCUE LIFEGUARD MAY NEVER SURF AGAIN

BONDI RESCUE LIFEGUARD MAY NEVER SURF AGAIN

KOBI GRAHAM has told the media and his friends that he may never get back on the board again.

The main player in the hit TV show BONDI RESCUE, broke his neck while surfing some challenging waves at Cape Solander near Kurnell. The graphic pictures showed Kobi wiped out and getting sucked over with the wave onto the rock platform OUCH! Kobi is having trouble coping with the pain associated with his injuries…not surprising as the wipe out is the biggest seen by shocked onlookers who thought he would not survive.

Kobi’s mate in the TV series, Anthony “Harries” Carroll was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph  “Kobi is in a lot of pain, particularly his arms, and he will be in a neck brace for another two months at least”.

BONDI RESCUE LIFEGUARD MAY NEVER SURF AGAIN

On a personal note all his mates are itching to get him back to work and in the water again, but the Bondi Rescue Lifeguard is not certain that he will ever do Life Guard duties again.

On a positive note, Kobi is a survivor and is walking again, and says he has got all feeling again in his limbs.

Two guys to mention in the rescue of Kobi are Billy Morris (who took the point of impact image attached) and Perth Standlick tow in guy, who with life guards did a great job in stabilising Kobi, as any false moves could have rendered more permanent injuries.

It won’t be long before he gets back in a positive role and in front of a camera as his popularity will demand.

Go Kobi!

Check out the photo by Billy Morris and the extended leggie with board at one end, and Kobie attached to the other, in the process of being crunched…ouch!!

The Truth Uncovered

There was a time and it is now Surfing History when a film maker, David Bradbury (arguably one of the best Aussie Doco’ film makers) did justice to the McTavish and Brewer argument.

What was Bradbury doing making a Surfing Doco? Well when asked this question Bradbury said, “ I grew up with Midget Farrelly and Bruce Brown were heroes of mine, so I was happy to run with it even though it was out of my norm, it was interesting to step outside my comfort zone of Political and Social issue events”.
