Mick Fanning
Just “fanning” the web pages and video blogs for a bit of interesting footage to share, and came across a couple of videos of Mick Fanning. One was footage of Fanning courtesy of Steve Maloney of Sunnycoast Klips here on the Sunshine Coast, and the other by Mick Fanning him self from the Goldie that shares an interesting concept of surfing.

Huge Wave
There are some guys that take it to the next level. They are the elite in the sport of Big Wave Riding.
Whatever it takes is hard for me to fathom, but they must be made of steel none the less.
Chasing a Huge Wave at any where on the Planet, at any time, takes a huge team of people to accomplish, and in the end we get to view an awesome wave on video, and a ride that takes as long in time as it took to shoot.
Following the Waves
Big Wave Surfers that chase the elusive monster waves around the Earths oceans haven’t as yet documented surf-able waves over 70 ft (21 meters) high…as yet.
One of the biggest waves ever surfed was claimed by Mike Parsons at arguably 66 ft. (20 metres) off Cortes Bank, California.
A surfing film called “Riding Giants” depicts big wave riders searching the world with the help of state of the art weather forcasting and satelite imaging to spot the areas of most interest. New spots turn up all the time and are generally called “Secrets” (until it gets out) and places in the Tasman and Pacific Oceans are fast becoming as popular as Cortes and Maverics and Jaws. The video I have attached is one of the above with Mike and if you listen carefully, as it is breath taking, with only the whoosh of the wind, and the smacking of the board on the wave.

NOOSA ’11-Festival of Surfing

As the saying goes, another year of “Pure Stoke,” In fact, this is the “20th Year of Pure Stoke” presented by Global Surf Industries and hosted by the Noosa Malibu Club.

What makes this event the most special in the world calendar of surfing, is that it has more than 800 competitors spread over Pro, Specialty, and Amateur categories, with an age demographic of 10 to 80 years old. Far different to 20 years ago, with about 100 Amateur’s or so competing in only a few categories, and today pushing for first spot in 23 divisions.

Noosa Festival organisers have not left out some Big Names that will feature in the South Pacific Resort Corporate Cup event. Celebrity surfers appearing at this time are; Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend, with Reno Abellira the Hawaiian big wave master, and Longboard world champions, local Josh Constable, Harley Ingleby, Wayne Lynch and the inimitable Bob McTavish. The idea this year is to hang out with your surfing heroes, have a great time and give much needed support to the Premier’s Flood Appeal.

The local Noosa Journal has got together with the Festival in the organisation of the Surfboard and Memorabilia Auction at the Festival Village in the Noosa Woods. This year auction curator Darryl Homan has positively milked the globe to bring the very best to noosa. A couple of boards of note are a ’67 Dewey Webber Feather model original pintail longboard with a Waveset fin, and a Rennie Yater 8’3″ transition gun in immaculate condition. hmmm! The auction kicks off on Thursday March 17 at 7pm prompt.

This event will span nine days with lots of entertainment on the beach and in Restaurants, Hotels, Cafes and advertised venues. The organisers have borne the weather in mind and this year have moved the entertainment venue from the Lions Park to the Noosa Woods, at the end of Hastings Street.

Should conditions at the 1st Point be unfavorable for surfing, the event will move to the secondary location at about Gate 12, through the end of Hastings Street to the Woods at Noosa West. The event is walking friendly, so park your cars a short distance away from the beach, using all day zones to avoid the Council Inspectors.

This event, the Global Surf Industries, NOOSA’11 Festival of surfing would not be without the host organisation Noosa Malibu Club and members, the fabulous team of volunteers including Sunshine Coast Tafe Students of Events, and major media sponsors Noosa Journal, Zinc 96.1FM, and Coastwatch getting the information out there.

BEAN Surfing Lately?

“Board Meeting”

Back at the Kawana beach break not long ago, where the “Board Meeting” Charity Surf Meet was recently held, a little known Surfboard model known as the BEAN was bean’ surfed by any one that wanted to give it a go, a sort of a Demo board if you like. Well this board, or BEAN as the model is known as, is an Aloha BEAN and manufactured by Global Surf Industries. Not just an ordinary Aloha Bean, not necessarily saying that any Bean is ordinary, they are all great boards for a variety of surf conditions, but this BEAN i’m going to rave about is the New Carbon Railed Epoxy Lightweight SLXC and is Stringerless! Meaning this BEAN just got better!

BEAN Surfing Lately?

This model is more commonly referred to as a Pod, as it is essentially a hybrid model, but still considered high performance suiting  small to medium surf, and a ripper of a fun board in the shore break. This BEAN SLXC has a slightly fuller nose for flotation for paddling and start up acceleration. The relaxed entry rocker maintains speed and glide and a slight single to double concave with a tail run out v, delivers response and bite, where it’s needed for smooth rail to rail changes. The tail rocker and sharp rails complete the design, and you can surf it right in the pocket.

Getting back to the “Board Meeting” held at Kawana and the caning this BEAN SLXC got on the day. Various guys had a go at it but the stand out was this surfer I’ll call “Mean”, because what he did to the bean in the some times overhead shitty shore break at Kawana was absolutely “Mean” He ripped the hell out of the head high dumpers with reo’s, snaps, and aggressive turns driving off the bottom hitting the lip and taking the big reo, oh yeah! so what you say!, all this on a little 5’9″ Bean SLXC.  This “Mean” guy was a whopping big guy weighing in at least 90 kg plus, on a board that suited max 75kg. NOT a STRESS Mark in sight upon inspection afterward s! Construction is everything!

Construction Is Everything

The BEAN SLXC construction further enhances to versatility of this BEAN. The stringer has been tossed out for a perimeter biaxial carbon rail system and a biaxial epoxy deck lay up over EPS core. No stringer allows the board a bit of flex to fit the contours of the wave more naturally through turns, and the biaxial glass and outer carbon rail produces that ‘snap back’ feel for amazing response. Not to put a finer point on its fin systems, you can fit it as a Quad or Thruster configuration, to further enhance your surfing freedom.

Pretty Much Bullshit

It’s pretty much bullshit on the south east coast, north of Maroochydore when a NE wind is prevailing. If you’re a surfer that is.

Thought I’d do some thing different this morning then, and ride my bike to work, (fun) but the visor on my helmet decides to go south, and the roads were wet any way.  No,… not a woos, just five round-a-bouts to negotiate in the greasy wet is no fun. Yeah, OK, woos.

Stopped in at Victory, but the view from the platform was bumpy, washy, and shitty.

Work at the surf-shop is mostly fun, so it’s off to “fun” I go.

What’s been popular this week has been the 7S and new McTavish models by Global Surf Industries.

Pretty Much Bullshit

One guy suggested recently he wouldn’t buy any imported or overseas made boards, as it is “un-Australian”. Pretty Much Bullshit I feel (He drove a Toyota, and wore Chinese clothes) well, that’s my opinion as it is, and these surfboards are as good as any local product ever made, and you can put lots of quids back into your own pocket to boot. They are built to a very high standard, and are cutting edge in manufacture. Can’t see McTavish, Webber, Tolhurst, Aloha, etc. signing off on any crap can you?

Getting back to what’s selling this week in store, and the winners are…the McTavish Bobsled, 7S Fish’s and the new Aloha SLXC (carbon rail, no stringer) surfboards. The Bobsled is the new (Bi-Axial layered up glass) model in SLX construction. The information for this is in this link …McTAVISH BOSLED. Brilliant performer!

Special of the week is a second hand Mal, one from the mid-coast NSW and 9’4” long and I could call it a big mans board being 3” through the guts, and x 23” wide. This board would have been about $1500 new and has been hidden under the house for a long time, it’s in great, almost as new condition, and it’s only $890.

This was never going to be a sales page, but I guess I digressed, and as I close the shop for another day, I can lament the broken visor…ah, but it’s raining again, and the weatherman said it wouldn’t. Thanks Liv.

THE BOARD MEETING CORPORATE SURF EVENT Each year a dedicated group of volunteers organize and manage The Board Meeting Corporate Surf Event to raise much-needed funds for local disabled children and their families. Over the last five years the event has raised over $130,000 for charity, proving again that surfers have big hearts when it comes to helping out those in the community.

The main event

The event, which started in 2003, is run in early November each year (this year November 6) and draws on the enthusiasm and generosity of the Surfing and Business communities to participate in an amateur surfing competition where the emphasis is on fun.
