Surf Shop – Stereotypes in the Workforce
About three years ago a young girl out of high school presented her self at my Surf Shop and asked me if I had any positions available. I had quizzed her about why she would like to work in a Surf Shop, and thought at the time she didn’t fit the typical stereotypes in the workplace of a Surf Shop. Her answers to my questions were typically cliche, but I might add, were answered with enthusiasm. There also seemed an eagerness in the way she answered, a true positiveness that was refreshingly different. I replied “not at the moment, but I’ll think about it, and you come and see me in three weeks time”.
I didn’t think to much about it over the next couple of weeks and to my surprise this young lady came in and said to me “Well I’m a bit early but I didn’t want you to forget you talked to me” This young lady is called Kirsty, and she is now a major part of the day to day running of my Surf Shop business at Peregian Beach. She is an integral part of the Surf Shop Peregian Beach operation, and even more so to my wife, who has adopted her as another daughter.
Now where is this all eluding to, well, over the last three years and now more recently I’ll be specific and point out that some male customers, (the 2% I’ll call them), have from time to time addressed her in ordinary language, derogatory name calling on social media, and also added body language in store, you get the picture, that she is female, doesn’t surf, so what would she know about surfing and running a Surf Shop.
To that 2%,I previously mentioned, my idea is this, when ever you are out and about store jumping for your surfing bargains, take it on face value that the person employed at the store you visit, knows what they are employed to know, despite what they look like, whether male or female, would be a great start.
Kirsty in her Grom days surfed a small Aloha surfboard, so she did surf, but life has its twists and turns and took her in other directions, and one being employed with us at Surf Shop Peregian Beach, and we are glad for that..

I’m thinking that Kirsty in some peoples minds just doesn’t fit what some see as the stereotype of a surfy kind of girl, that would typically work in a Surf Shop, not being one that easily fits in with the language and the look. Yes, she is definitely not the surfy looking kind of girl. That’s just the point I’m making to the 2%,… Just because a shop assistant doesn’t look the part, doesn’t mean they don’t know the job.
Kirsty takes it upon her self to become knowledgeable in all things that pertain to the Surf Shop and the products we sell, and in some cases she knows more about the products we sell than the reps that sell the stuff to us, and that is the case with Kirsty at Surf Shop Peregian Beach.
When doing this draft my mates have commented “why give the 2% any time of day”…I say “ignorance is bliss and you have to start some where to reduce that 2% in this perfect world”.
To the 98% of our male customers that are pleasantly surprised at her knowledge and service, and often thank her for her for that, we in turn thank you for your patronage.

The surfboard used is a 9’1″ McTavish Evo “Epic” Channel model only available through Surf Shop Peregian Beach. NEARLY ALL fin boxes on malibu’s and retro mal’s have the same fin box configuration, the exception being the length of some, and longer fin boxes usually accommodate bigger fins. Your fin will need to accomodate your fin box length, and the fin that came with the board is a good start. However, a variety of after market sizes are styles available at your local surf shop.

Volcom Fiji Pro – Tavarua 2nd – 14th June 2013
This month is going to be a highly entertaining period in Surfing as far as Pro Surfing goes.
There are a couple of rounds that will be held in tropical conditions for the Volcom Fiji Pro 2013 with the possibility of high scoring waves on both lefts and rights first up though is the Volcom Fiji Pro at Tavarua Fiji.
This waves here break long and hollow and to the left with size being no object, for the reef can take all swells. How ever if the conditions aren’t right, there is always a move to Restaurant Reef, which also favors a long straight-as line, and is less subject to the elements than Cloudbreak.
Both spots will showcase all the techniques in each surfers arsenals there will, “barrels galore” and any “airs” will take back stage.

On any other day

The 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro went down in the history books last year, with massive 20-foot Cloudbreak, causing injuries, upsets, and one of the most dominant performances ever recorded from 11-time world champion Kelly Slater that’s going to be tough to top this year.

Wave selection and positioning are key and will serve as important factors in success. Overall the Volcom Fiji Pro 2013 has become very interesting with Jordy Smith and Adriano de Souza shooting to the top of the ratings after the finals in Brazil.
As the saying goes “best on the day will do it” so the event is wide open to every one.
Look for the guys who fin their boards to the hilt, to get the best of a driving situation.

Magic Mushroom by Aloha Surfboards was the surfboard of choice just over one year ago.
Stevo chose this board as part of his quiver primarily because this board got a good review, and it would suit a surfing trip to the Maldives to film at the Four Seasons Maldives Champions Trophy at the end of August beginning Sept.

“The extra width through the centre profile, and bottom contours are similar to that of a high performance short board. The hip positioned just forward of the fins, reduces the tail width to maintain the rail-to-rail sensitivity and response, of a much narrower board”.

Magic Mushroom – Construction

Available in SLX Epoxy with Bi-Axial layered up glass construction, is essentially two separate layers of flat fibers woven together. The faint lines you see running from nose-to-tail on the decks of the boards is the stitching that holds these two layers together. The fibers in Biaxial Fiberglass are oriented at 45 degrees, compared to traditional fiberglass weave that’s oriented at 90 degrees”.

Evert from Surf-Shop Peregian asks “What are the advantages if using Biaxial Fiberglass”?
Jamie Willems says, “The increased surface area of the flat fibers in Biaxial Fiberglass gives a stronger deck, and less chance of de-lamination from foot pressure. Round fiber glass can’t match flat fiber glass adhesion”.

From time to time we here at the Surf Shop Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast get asked questions that some people might say are stupid, but I’m of the belief that a question not asked, is never answered, and that applies also on How To Wax Your Surfboard.
