GOING VERTICAL
The Truth Uncovered
There was a time and it is now Surfing History when a film maker, David Bradbury (arguably one of the best Aussie Doco’ film makers) did justice to the McTavish and Brewer argument.
What was Bradbury doing making a Surfing Doco? Well when asked this question Bradbury said, “ I grew up with Midget Farrelly and Bruce Brown were heroes of mine, so I was happy to run with it even though it was out of my norm, it was interesting to step outside my comfort zone of Political and Social issue events”.
This movie has footage shot mainly in Hawaii and California with lots of archival scenes of Surfing hero’s over the last 40 odd years contributing.
Going Vertical dives into the Short Board Revolution and asks the big question, who was responsible for starting the “Going Vertical” short board revolution?
There were two main contenders one being the iconic Aussie Bob McTavish or the legendary Dick Brewer from the US. The battle lines were drawn and a great story unfolds.
Going Vertical is a film for all audiences, and not just another Surfing Film as Bradbury explains “ It’s a look at the history and culture of Surfing and the nationalistic pride between the Americans and Australians both claiming to be the first to start the Short Board Revolution”. Bradbury continues, “I would like to redress the issue and reinvestigate it”
Today, surfers take the difference in boards available to the public for granted and not many would even think that it has been a painful evolution, and a great cost to a number of Surfers from across the Pacific as the story unfolds, explains.
Finally enough, Bradburys terrific effort in bringing this compelling surf move to the screen evokes a sense of perspective on today’s surfing generation both overseas and in Australia,
And at the end of the day every one should stand up and say G’day Bob you’r Going Vertical !
