BEAN Surfing Lately?

“Board Meeting”

Back at the Kawana beach break not long ago, where the “Board Meeting” Charity Surf Meet was recently held, a little known Surfboard model known as the BEAN was bean’ surfed by any one that wanted to give it a go, a sort of a Demo board if you like. Well this board, or BEAN as the model is known as, is an Aloha BEAN and manufactured by Global Surf Industries. Not just an ordinary Aloha Bean, not necessarily saying that any Bean is ordinary, they are all great boards for a variety of surf conditions, but this BEAN i’m going to rave about is the New Carbon Railed Epoxy Lightweight SLXC and is Stringerless! Meaning this BEAN just got better!

BEAN Surfing Lately?

This model is more commonly referred to as a Pod, as it is essentially a hybrid model, but still considered high performance suiting small to medium surf, and a ripper of a fun board in the shore break. This BEAN SLXC has a slightly fuller nose for flotation for paddling and start up acceleration. The relaxed entry rocker maintains speed and glide and a slight single to double concave with a tail run out v, delivers response and bite, where it’s needed for smooth rail to rail changes. The tail rocker and sharp rails complete the design, and you can surf it right in the pocket.

Getting back to the “Board Meeting” held at Kawana and the caning this BEAN SLXC got on the day. Various guys had a go at it but the stand out was this surfer I’ll call “Mean”, because what he did to the bean in the some times overhead shitty shore break at Kawana was absolutely “Mean” He ripped the hell out of the head high dumpers with reo’s, snaps, and aggressive turns driving off the bottom hitting the lip and taking the big reo, oh yeah! so what you say!, all this on a little 5’9″ Bean SLXC. This “Mean” guy was a whopping big guy weighing in at least 90 kg plus, on a board that suited max 75kg. NOT a STRESS Mark in sight upon inspection afterward s! Construction is everything!

Construction Is Everything

The BEAN SLXC construction further enhances to versatility of this BEAN. The stringer has been tossed out for a perimeter biaxial carbon rail system and a biaxial epoxy deck lay up over EPS core. No stringer allows the board a bit of flex to fit the contours of the wave more naturally through turns, and the biaxial glass and outer carbon rail produces that ‘snap back’ feel for amazing response. Not to put a finer point on its fin systems, you can fit it as a Quad or Thruster configuration, to further enhance your surfing freedom.

WARNING-THIS IS NOT YOUR DAD’S FISH

Hands off Dad!

This is the dire WARNING as a headline, for a recent release from GLOBAL SURF INDUSTRIES of a surfboard that Dad’s should leave alone, and it goes like this:-

“WARNING- THIS IS NOT YOUR DAD’S FISH”

GSI defines this latest release of the 7S WMD as “the bullet movement for performance alternative in short board designs”. They have tagged the sales pitch as a “warning-this is not your dad’s fish” possibly to create interest in both camps.

The 7S WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) “boasts high performance rails and a super thin swallow tail that generates massive speed acceleration and thrust out of every turn”

What’s the Secret

The secret to this board is that it has a very flat entry rocker and thin tail exit which allows you to get on the wave earlier, and set yourself up to generating your speed quickly, even after performing a spin or a vertical cut back re entry. When you look at the line of the board, one stand out design construction is obvious, and that is the ¾ length full single concave that provides you with the lift, and speed, in nearly all conditions from overhead, to sloppy knee high waves. The WMD’s single flyer swallow tail needs further inspection, as the tail together with the “spiral vee” just behind the leading fins, allows drive and pivot like a thruster with the ease of a twin fin. It will go like the clappers just as a thruster or a twinnie, with wave count up because of the extra floatation and paddle on, of the fish design, and that’s all got to be good.

The WMD comes with FCF fins standard, or you can opt up for twinnies with a small trailer fin.

WHAT MAKES FISH SURFBOARDS RIP?

Global Surfboard manufacturing companies work hard to identify and categorise the models they make, and one surfboard model of note is the 7S Super Fish Surfboard range.

FISH SURFBOARDS.

Fish Surfboards have become a world phenomenon in popularity not only for accomplished surfers but also those who want to lift their level to a higher point, and when only a Fish will do that job.

Basic Fish Model

The basic Fish model shape shows a more hippier characteristic feature over it’s counterpart, the modern day Thruster . This Hippier shape if you will, is what gives it the term Fish, and along with that shape is given a generous amount of floatation, and it is inherently wider, and also made thicker than a Thruster style surfboard.

Super Fish XL

This extra size has opened up a new world of surfing for the bigger surfer as well, when floatation then becomes a lesser problem and Fish boards can be set up as twins or quads can handle a variety of wave size being bumpy or smooth, and in the hands of an expert. even quick suckey waves.

One Fish surfboard is at the fore front of the Fish surfing world, and is is the model known as 7S Super Fish, and a model for thebig blokes the 7S Super Fish XL.

So what makes fish surfboards rip?7S is available in all sizes at our Peregian Beach Sunshine Coast Surf Shop and their construction is regular polyurethane fiber glass, and also the acclaimed Epoxy finished models, that are super lightweight, and very durable,

7S SECRETS

The 7S secrets are that this style of board has the “step deck design”, which gives this Fish design model and that also gives them a high buoyancy advantage, but this factor doesn’t interfere with the inbuilt high performance rail design. To add insult to injury it doesn’t stop there, when the bottom of the board features low entry rocker that flows into a full length concave, to help get the best out of full rail turns.

This 7s Super Fish board can help you make sections that you never have before, it is as smooth as it is fast.

Manufacturing Features

The manufacture points to note is that they are glassed with 2 x 4 oz deck and 1 x 4 oz bottom with an extra 4oz patch around the fin area. The boards come in a silky smooth Gloss Polish finish in the Poly models, or Gloss Painted finish in the Epoxy models, and they all come standard with FCS M7 Quad Glassflex Series fins.

FISH SURFBOARDS

Fish surfboards are really in your face, in any line-up, even more so on small bumpy wave days. The name “fish” is related to many models of surfboards. Then what is a fish board? There are two main types, and possibly a third called a Swallow Tail, that is also in some circles referred to as a Fish. Thought a Swallow was a bird,…or, any way, I digress…

Fish Surfboard

Fish Traditional Model – Can also be called Retro Fish, for models based on late 70′s, early 80′s templates, these styles have aged well. Fishes are traditionally, wider fatter surfboards than normal, of up to 23 inches wide and up around 5’6” – 6ft 8” in length with a thickness of up to 31/2″ proportionately. They are thicker hence offering greater flotation for the short fater length in proportion.They are all available at the Peregian Beach Surf Shop.

Much like life in the 70′s but more usual today, is to set them up as a twin or quad (some have 5 fin plug set ups to allowing quad, twin or 3 fin use, a la thruster) These Fish boards really do offer better flotation for their size.

Fish Modern Model, Copied in shape to that of a short board but showing a “hippier” characteristic of the traditional fish. Wider than the standard Thruster Short Board, and generally to be about 6 inches shorter and having wider thicker volume. Most Modern Fish have the thruster tri-fin set up as a standard application. Very good for surfing up to about 4ft surf and they handle bumpier conditions, and have a growing enviable reputation, as a terrific small wave performer.

Big Fellows Boards

Today modern world of Fish surfing has brought about the expansion of size to suit the big fellows, and it is not uncommon to see large examples up to 8’0” Fish boards. These are in proportion, shape, and thickness for their length, and perform well in relation to their size and weight they are designed to carry. Most short board exponents these days are extending their quiver by including a modern fish as their small wave surfboard.

Trad Fish

Traditional fish owners are a little “Retro” in their outlook in that they prefer the older 80’s style boards that are thicker still and offer even more flotation and a skatier type feel. These traditonal fish are usually set up as twins or quads and can handle a wider variety of waves including way overhead surf.

Epoxy Fish

The epoxy examples of these surfboards have become quite common these days. They offer remarkably up to 10% more flotation than their traditional polyester counterparts, as well as having added strength, but comments are that they some times don’t have the same performance feel to them, and exhibit less drive of the bottom in turns.

Jamie Willems Event Manager fo Global Surf Industriesr G.S.I., presented the “Surfboard Designers Tour 2009″. Other notables on the “Tour” were Steve Walden, Greg Webber, Richie Lovett and Thomas Myerhoffer is now famous for his unusual shaped surfboard that doubles up as a short-come-longboard (see illustration attached). This board has the ability of a short board, where the rear shape comes into play, coupled with the full frontal of a Malibu.This board has impressed those who have tried it and sales seem to reflect that. The first ever Manly Festival of Surfing (MFOS) is being held 5-8 November 2009.

With Manly, Australia being Global Surf Industrie’s global headquarters, it is only right that they are the principal sponsor of this event.

Celebrating surfing and surf culture the MFOS looks set to be a classic. There’ll be surfing Legends in and out of the water, book signings, board demos, art auctions, art exhibitions, live music, a kid zone, night surfing, surf lessons, movies and plenty more.

The latest addition to the 2010 festival line up is a Surf Expo, called OURS…

Festival director, Phil Jarratt said: “OURS will be a legitimate exposition of what is happening in surfing today, from cutting edge surfboard design to swell forecasting, from green surfboard technology to the latest in wood, from new websites to old paper, from surf art to new music…” Sounds pretty good to me!!

Coming off the back of the Global Surf Industries Manly Festival of Surfing from 5-8^th of November, Designers/Shapers will be doing an Australian tour with the book release of “STOKED” from legend Bob McTavish, Bob will be doing book signings at the venues below and with him we will have Greg Webber (Webber Surfboards), Richie Lovett (ex Pro Surfer-Aloha Designer), Steve Walden (Walden Surfboards) and Thomas Meyerhoffer (Meyerhoffer-Revolutionary new shape).
