Steve came in with a few questions. Ticking all the boxes, the 7S model from Global Surf Industries certainly fit the bil, and Steve from Coolum Signworks, is a happy surfer that couldn’t wait to get his brand new retro style 7S board in the water,… probably cover and all.

BEAN Surfing Lately?

“Board Meeting”

Back at the Kawana beach break not long ago, where the “Board Meeting” Charity Surf Meet was recently held, a little known Surfboard model known as the BEAN was bean’ surfed by any one that wanted to give it a go, a sort of a Demo board if you like. Well this board, or BEAN as the model is known as, is an Aloha BEAN and manufactured by Global Surf Industries. Not just an ordinary Aloha Bean, not necessarily saying that any Bean is ordinary, they are all great boards for a variety of surf conditions, but this BEAN i’m going to rave about is the New Carbon Railed Epoxy Lightweight SLXC and is Stringerless! Meaning this BEAN just got better!

BEAN Surfing Lately?

This model is more commonly referred to as a Pod, as it is essentially a hybrid model, but still considered high performance suiting small to medium surf, and a ripper of a fun board in the shore break. This BEAN SLXC has a slightly fuller nose for flotation for paddling and start up acceleration. The relaxed entry rocker maintains speed and glide and a slight single to double concave with a tail run out v, delivers response and bite, where it’s needed for smooth rail to rail changes. The tail rocker and sharp rails complete the design, and you can surf it right in the pocket.

Getting back to the “Board Meeting” held at Kawana and the caning this BEAN SLXC got on the day. Various guys had a go at it but the stand out was this surfer I’ll call “Mean”, because what he did to the bean in the some times overhead shitty shore break at Kawana was absolutely “Mean” He ripped the hell out of the head high dumpers with reo’s, snaps, and aggressive turns driving off the bottom hitting the lip and taking the big reo, oh yeah! so what you say!, all this on a little 5’9″ Bean SLXC. This “Mean” guy was a whopping big guy weighing in at least 90 kg plus, on a board that suited max 75kg. NOT a STRESS Mark in sight upon inspection afterward s! Construction is everything!

Construction Is Everything

The BEAN SLXC construction further enhances to versatility of this BEAN. The stringer has been tossed out for a perimeter biaxial carbon rail system and a biaxial epoxy deck lay up over EPS core. No stringer allows the board a bit of flex to fit the contours of the wave more naturally through turns, and the biaxial glass and outer carbon rail produces that ‘snap back’ feel for amazing response. Not to put a finer point on its fin systems, you can fit it as a Quad or Thruster configuration, to further enhance your surfing freedom.

WARNING-THIS IS NOT YOUR DAD’S FISH

Hands off Dad!

This is the dire WARNING as a headline, for a recent release from GLOBAL SURF INDUSTRIES of a surfboard that Dad’s should leave alone, and it goes like this:-

“WARNING- THIS IS NOT YOUR DAD’S FISH”

GSI defines this latest release of the 7S WMD as “the bullet movement for performance alternative in short board designs”. They have tagged the sales pitch as a “warning-this is not your dad’s fish” possibly to create interest in both camps.

The 7S WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) “boasts high performance rails and a super thin swallow tail that generates massive speed acceleration and thrust out of every turn”

What’s the Secret

The secret to this board is that it has a very flat entry rocker and thin tail exit which allows you to get on the wave earlier, and set yourself up to generating your speed quickly, even after performing a spin or a vertical cut back re entry. When you look at the line of the board, one stand out design construction is obvious, and that is the ¾ length full single concave that provides you with the lift, and speed, in nearly all conditions from overhead, to sloppy knee high waves. The WMD’s single flyer swallow tail needs further inspection, as the tail together with the “spiral vee” just behind the leading fins, allows drive and pivot like a thruster with the ease of a twin fin. It will go like the clappers just as a thruster or a twinnie, with wave count up because of the extra floatation and paddle on, of the fish design, and that’s all got to be good.

The WMD comes with FCF fins standard, or you can opt up for twinnies with a small trailer fin.

CLASSIC MALIBU-PETERS STORY

NOOSA HEADS and CLASSIC MALIBU

Noosa Heads is renowned for its point surf, and Classic Malibu. The set-up is such that, when the swell is from the right direction, we can have five different breaks working simultaneously, each giving long, glassy walls to slide or rip on a Peter White Board.

This year has been decidedly different, barely a week has gone by since mid-January without a fairly decent swell gracing our shores keeping every one in the Surf Industry very busy.

The guys in the Classic Malibu factory who are always swimming against the tide of conformity are no different. With their tried and tested models continually refined to make them, if possible, even better, they are also adding in some new models, such as the V-Flex, and re-birthing some former-day classics, such as the Egg the Fish and the Stinger.

I mention at this point the ‘Classic’ Custom Mal’s that grace our Surf-Shop at Peregian Beach. Definitely one offs like a lot I have seen come out of the Noosa factory, and for the Twin Fin enthusiast, a splendid three stringer with hand shaped timber fins, to top off a Classic Peter White style.

While I’m on about Classic Malibu’s and Peter White, I have been given a Link on Peter’s history and how he evolved ending up in the Surfing Industry in Noosa, and it makes great reading. Waves for Development

WAVES for Development
The idea for WAVES originated on the beaches of northern Peru in late 2004, when a group of international surfers shared a desire to help local youth with little resources enjoy surfing. Over the course of the next 3 years, WAVES formed a network over 30 dedicated individuals, organizations, and institutions in 10 countries. In 2006, Global Surf Industries committed to donating a shipping container of surfboards to be used in WAVES programming in Peru. These surfboards arrived in Peru in mid-2007.
Today, WAVES for Development is a formalized not-for-profit association in Peru and Switzerland. WAVES for Development International is a not-for-profit corporation in the United States, currently applying for 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity status. WAVES for Development Peru has signed an agreement with the Peruvian Sports Institute and the Peruvian Surfing Federation to bring Educational Surf and Adventure Voluntourism programming to communities throughout Peru. WAVES is currently offering Adventure Voluntourism and Educational Surf Programs in Lobitos, Peru.
