Stand Stand Up Paddle Board Surfing or “SUP’S” for short, is fast becoming a global sport that is becoming what some areas are spruiking as the New Surfing Phenomenon.
The Stand Up Paddle Boards or “Sups” as it is called originated in Polynesia, but the Hawaiians took it on as their own in the ’60′s. They began with it by using it to instruct large groups of learners and the higher stance and viewpoint, gave them the control they needed not only to control the learner groups, but also to sight the pending swells. The Stand Up Paddle Boards used a single paddle with a long handle that was used to great effect to propel them forward.
They became quite popular at that time but it seems only in Hawaii as the rest of the world was not impressed, and as the ’60′s moved to the ’70′s the “Sups” were all but pushed aside by the “short board” era and a bunch of Aussie’s reaping havoc on the world by winning surfing titles galore, and in Hawaii’s own back yard, did not sit well with them..

However, today pushing 2010, Sups have again grabbed a spot in Global popularity and has been suggested by athletes as the total work out fun machine that you can do standing up. In effect it gives you a strong “core’ work out.
You can do it on still water anywhere, or as a supplement to surfing by Paddle Boarding the surf.
WHAT ARE STAND UP PADDLE BOARDS
What are Stand Up Paddle Boards? They can be best described as over sized surfboards that are fairly fat. But with this, offer good flotation. “Sup’s” can be “Custom Made” at a price, but most are shop boards, to keep the cost down and board makers keep a standard or high performance model on hand in the showroom. These models are between, generally 9’6″ up to 10’6″ in some cases, with the smallest size being most popular. They also feature padded deck grip with concave or double concave bottoms, with three fins for turn and directional stability.
“Sup’s” can be used pretty well any where, on the lakes, rivers, or for that big work out, used as the new surf weapon.
This New Surfing Phenomenon, used in the surf for a complete fun work out, is set to explode in a Global fashion exploring a new way of surfing, and rest assured Stand Up Paddle Boards are set to be the New Surfing Phenomenon, and change the current idea of surfing forever.

Flawed System? Following a Board of Directors meeting recently the ASP appears to have quelled the threat posed by the ESPN backed Rebel Tour. With flaws in their current system highlighted by the breakaway tour, this meeting was always going to be of utmost importance.
The key information to come out of the meeting was that the surfers and holders of “event licence’s” were backing the ASP; the introduction of a single-tier rating system was to be introduced; numbers reduced to 32 per event; and that prize money would be increased.

Constable Wins at Port Macquarie
Festival. photo : Michael Tyrpenou/Surfing NSW Josh Constable (Noosa, QLD) today backed up his Australian Longboard Title, by recently claiming the first ever Australian Stand Up Paddle Title at the Country Energy Australian Surf Titles. Port Macquarie, NSW – Sunday, 23 August 2009: Josh Constable (Noosa, QLD) created a piece of Australian surfing history at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival after being crowned the first ever Australian Stand-Up Paddle champion. Constable proved his unbridled talent to all at Town Beach, and Constable was in great touch, showing no signs of fatigue after winning his fifth Ausrralian Longboard Title. “I’m over the moon,” he said after defeating Matt Lumley (Torquay, VIC), Keahi De Aboitiz (SunshineBeach, QLD) and Tully St John (Noosa, QLD), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, in a high-scoring, action packed final, “To be the first ever Australian Champion is such an amazing feeling”, he added. . “Today was the first time I have ridden a stand-up paddleboard in two years,” he admitted The hybrid discipline, which takes inspiration from surfing, skiing, wakeboarding and skateboarding, continues to rapidly evolve and grow in popularity, something which Constable is happy to be a part of. There were a few larrikins around in the ‘60s and to this day, mention just one name, and instantly people can relate a story or two over the last 40 years or so.
Bob McTavish, an undisputed legend of surfing culture in Australia.
About the mid ‘60s he worked at another legends place, Hayden’s factory on the Sunshine Coast and numerous board shops at Brookvale.
Surfing magazines have extensively covered Bob’s life an achievements and his exploits have from time to time filled books and headlines in the newspapers where he and friend David Chigley stowed away successfully on a ocean liner bound for Hawaii.
Bob won a string of surfing events in his time including the Queensland Open Title in ’65. Competitive surfing for Bob proved to be too restrictive and he eventually retired.
Bob McTavish, a man that surfed the coast, living from day to day doing what was needed to allow him to pursue his surfing dream and to this day with the help and friendship of many, he became the innovator of the board revolution as we know today.
