ABOUT SURFBOARDS
WHAT I RIDE…TODAY
I was having a long chat with one of my best mates, I’ll call him Jay, about surfboards and other things in surfing as you do, and he made the comment that I have never given a personal critique on my Surf-Shop site about any thing I have ever ridden in my past. Jay suggested that, as I have a lot of history in the surf and on the beach, I should be able to write about Surfboards and What I Ride Today.
Having a Surf-Shop allows me to test ride a lot of surfboards, especially when the distributors loan them out, and I have to say at this point, as an older guy, a test ride some times doesn’t come easy and I get trashed. Best to bury those kinds of days.
So Jay,… here is the story About Surfboards, and What I Ride Today.
Jamie Willems from Global Surf Industries suggested I have a go of this new McTavish 9’1” Original SLX, and after a couple of days I just couldn’t come to grips with it. I couldn’t really understand why, but it just didn’t suit my style of riding. Quite a dilemma, as I always have been a fan of McTavish Surfboards, so now I thought a McTavish was never going to be in the mix.
A few weeks passed and Jamie told me of an event that was to raise money for under privileged children called the “Board Meeting,” and Jamie suggested I have a go and Global surf Industries will look after the riders in the team with surfboards. OK I’ll be in it, and Jamie gave me a McTavish 9’1” Fireball Evolution to try. Being the latest model with great looking grey McTavish shadow logos across the lower half of the deck was impressive, and this look really made this board stand out and I was set to go.
So I needed a couple of days to fam. myself on it, and Granite had a little slider and the tides were just right. This board was set up by Jamie at absolutely bog standard settings with all original fins, and the centre fin placed in the middle of the box. Should work, well the first wave was a shoulder high job, with a nice wall and a progressively breaking lip. This board was so responsive, just flicking it around with little cut backs and bottom turns, and the board handling the lip without any concern, dropping down with out any rail grab to throw you off, and that was just the first wave. This thing was I would say the most responsive board I have ever wet my feet on. That board is that new SLX Bia-Axial high performance super lightweight constructed surfboard McTavish him self raves about, and all true. This board put a smile on my face for a whole three-hour session.
I came back to earth when the comp came around the following weekend. The event controllers decided the shore break at the Kawana Surf Life Savers Club was the location of choice. With at least an overhead shore break wave that hammered and broke a few boards during the day, I was not impressed with the surf at all, as I don’t really like a shore break. This unsure feeling set the tone for me for the rest of the day, and when our teams heat came around and it was my turn to hit it. All I had to do was only catch one wave, and then pass on to my team member, quite simple really, but I just didn’t time anything at all and got trashed so many times, in the end a foamy got me in for a hand over.
That surfing session on that new McTavish was a disaster, as was a day out with Jamie Willems at Happy Valley not long ago. Well that guy can surf an ironing board, but his choice this day was a McTavish 9’1” Original in SLX Bi-Axial light weight model, (the one I couldn’t come to grips with) and he proceeded to shred the surf apart, and watching him became my pastime at that point.
I have had some great little sessions since that time however, including some overhead waves at my fav. spot, and the McTavish Fireball SLX board under my feet (read “me”) likes long smooth walls for some hot dogging and nose rides.
This board has put a smile on my face, and it is all About Surfboards and What I Ride Today. Every time I take it out it undoubtedly reassures me it is the best I have been lucky enough to surf so far, and lets face it at my age, the enthusiasm it has instilled is all the help I need, because I know that in the end, all you need is enthusiasm.
